“Lessons from the Administrator” -Joe’s Use it don’t Lose it Filing System

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Until 2004 I kept everything that I thought important enough to keep in two basic metal filing cabinets. Yes, I had about 8 drawers filled with papers, charts, handouts, sermon notes, brochure samples, and anything else I found to be “valuable”. This system was better than a pile on my desk; however, it was still very cumbersome and to be honest, I had a VERY difficult time remembering where I filed things. So here’s the switch: I move EVERYTHING to my computer. I for over 4 months my administrative assistant scanned document, brochures, notes and anything else I had into PDF files.

Several advantages to scanning and saving in multiple locations, but the bottom line reason I do it is this: it’s just easier to find it later. Here’s the basic filing system I found to be helpful in family ministry:

New July Series…Lessons from the Administrator

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

This July, I will be posting a series of posts focusing on Administration. Over 13 years ago, I took the plunge into full-time ministry. Over those years I have learned many “life lessons”. These are lessons that they never taught me in school. As a matter of fact, I majored in Mission’s and minored in Greek… how I ended up in children’s ministry is beyond me. Either way, I‘ve had to learn a lot of very painful lessons. It’s a good thing I did though; I now oversee over 1,000 children, over 600 volunteers, and a full-time staff of skilled children ministers. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

- Joe’s use it, don’t lose it filing system

- Playing to your strengths  – How to effectively utilize your whole team

- The difference between Leading and Managing

- How to appreciate timelines and checklists

- Time Management

- How to utilize high capacity volunteers

- Shifting schedules

- Great Expectations
