Keeping your focus when leading your staff
Monday, March 28th, 2011What’s your focus these days? I’ve had the distinct privilege of serving on a couple large mega-church staffs. Every staff is different. Each one has its strengths and its weaknesses. One thing that I, like many others, hate in leadership is the bureaucracy. Here’s the thing, I’ve been in enough churches now to understand this, you can’t stop it and many times, you actually need it. The larger the church gets, the more important it is to have policies and procedures in place that help the organization run effectively and efficiently. Here’s what I’ve learned though that is crucial in any church environment. Keep your focus on being authentic. Keep your focus on winning the lost. You’re your focus on Kingdom things. Bureaucracy runs amuck when it focuses on bullet points, budgets, and blue jeans.
When your staff meeting is limited to bullet pointed updates and action-steps, you’ve lost your focus and you’ve become too task oriented. You’re team will quickly feel like they’re just keeping the machine running.
When your discussions always seem to center around the budget you’ve lost your focus and you’ve become resource dependent. You’re probably following the “if we build it they will come” model of ministry.
When your more concerned with not allowing your staff to wear blue jeans than you are of hour their marriage is doing you’ve lost your focus and you’ve become image protective. Since we often teach others that God looks on the inside…we probably should too.
Action step: Where’s your focus? Where’s your team focus?

MR. Quiet…
Thursday, March 24th, 2011It’s been such a crazy couple weeks. I’ve been working on a few resources for Empowering Families and one really cool one with Craig that’s geared towards ministry leaders. I also spent a couple hours last week in Louisville with Timothy Paul Jones @ Southern Seminary. I mentioned (HERE) about some great stuff they’ve got going on down there in regards to family ministry. More to update on that front soon.
Sorry it’s been quiet… just trying to keep my priorities straight during a very busy time. SO… every free time I have the last couple weeks has be given to family, not blogging. I know you understand.
