Take your Chili Cook Off to the next level – Equipping your staff
Many of you have been interested in (THIS POST) on Team Time Chili Cook Off – Setting Expectations. I thought I’d take this to the next level. This past year as been…well… to be honest, pretty crazy as our church opened up a $16,000,000 auditorium and with it, we’ve grown over 200 families in one year. The Chili Cook Off was our attempt to set the stage for all our new volunteers to succeed in ministry. As you can imagine, it was a huge success. Now as a staff we’re ready to take this to the next level.
What does the next level look like?
For us the next level is to not only leading our teams on the weekend, but to walk with them on their spiritual journey as well. We also understand that as a team we can’t take people where we have not been. So for us, here’s the follow-up to the Chili Cook Off.
We asked the question, “When was the last time we REALLY studied the Bible. I mean, REALLY studied like an exegetical study…verse by verse, word by word.
Why would we study like this: because we believe that these are God’s words for us and therefore, we need to know and understand them…and not only in general terms.
We quickly realized that it had be a very long time (if ever) that each of us has studied God’s word like this.
So, what are we going to study? How?
What: 1&2 Samuel (We choose this as a team- a lot of great characters in these books)
How: I printed of articles over how to study Biblical Narrative. I printed off a few commentary helps and we’re following this outline of study:
Survey Reading
We are taking a week to read, read, and reread the passage. (because it’s narrative, we’re also listening to it audibly.) Who are the main characters etc.
Historical Background
We’ll take a week or so to dig into the historical context of the passage by using the internet and other biblical helps books.
Interpretive Questions
We’ll take a week to ask good questions of the passage and find some answers
Key Terms
We’re going to look at what are the key words of the passages? Then take a week or so to do a word study on these words.
Structure
We’re looking at how is the passage structured, flow of thought…etc.
Commentaries
We’re going to take a week or so to see what the commentaries say about the text.
Application
Then after all this…we’re going to see what is God saying to US through this?
This is our outline. I’ll keep you posted on what we’re learning. I’ve learned over the years that I’ll never be surprised by what God teaches us when we choose to dig into his word.
What are you doing to develop your team spiritually this year?
