Movie: Martian Child (2007) New Line Cinema

Staring John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Amanda Peet, and Bobby Coleman

Watch Martian Child as a team then talk over the following questions -

Discussion questions:

What is meant by the phrase “people are the way they are for a reason”?

What we’re Dennis’s needs?

How did it drive his actions?

How does David show unconditional love?

How does Dennis respond to David’s love?

How do we try to fit kids into “our mold”?

How can we discover each child’s individual bend?

* Side note: I looked up several Christian reviews on the movie and many of them gave the movie an “average” rating.  Personally, as guy who works with children and families every day… I think they’re crazy. I personally think it’s an awesome movie. There are some great acting moments and some not so great, but that’s life! It’s an amazing “teachable” movie. Have you seen it? What do you think about it?

Leadership Advance – Retreating for the Advancement of Your Team!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

I have been in ministry for over fourteen years. If there is one thing I’ve discovered, it’s the art of catching my breath. In the world of “go-go-go” it’s really easy to forget to step back and breathe a little. Every year I take my teams on at last one retreat that I call my LEADERSHIP ADVANCE. It’s retreating for the purpose of advancing. Some of these retreats focus more on planning, while others focus on playing. It’s all determined by what the team needs. Here is the study material for one Leadership Advance called “Breathe”. It was a time of year to just catch our breath. Here’s how it worked:

Retreat location – a camp where we could rent a cabin large enough to house my wife and I and my staff.

Schedule

Meals – the usual meal times (we planned and cooked our own food for trip, with dinner out each night)

Study time – we met a couple times a day to “go over” the material offered here.

Play time- spent about 75% of the time playing!  Board games, poker, horseback riding… etc.

The point – We just enjoyed each other’s company.

I’ve been doing these Leadership Advances for over 9 years now and have come to the belief that they’re one of the very best things we do as a staff.

*As the leader, give each staff member a “goodie-bag” and a small gift when you arrive to your location. This is a great time for you to love on you team.
