Larry the Cucumber falls on his face…
Monday, November 29th, 2010In case you missed it (HERE), here’s another shot of Larry taking a spill. It’s probably poor taste, as the guy inside of the costume had to hurt, BUT come on… you have to laugh when an 8 foot cucumber bites it!

Tuesday Morning Controversy: Leading Under Pressure…
Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010Top news: Brad Childress (former) head coach of the Vikings fired!
I heard the news this morning on my way home from dropping the kids off for school. I was thinking for a bit about how many coaches lead their team year after year with the feeling of doom in the pit of the their stomach…(the head coach of the University of Michigan for example!)
Coaches NEED to perform week after week. This is the only way they can keep their job. I feel terrible for guys such as Jim Caldwell, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts…”the guy who followed Tony Dungy”. Who can do that? Who can follow Tony Dungy?
The Bridge:
I think of guys and gals I know in ministry. Often, they feel a similar pressure to perform. Particularly, within the last couple years – week after week, it seems that church leaders I know, need to perform…and perform well. There’s a lot of pressure. I think of Gene Apple. Do you know that name? He was “the guy who followed Bill Hybels” at Willow Creek Community Church. I remember hearing a Defining Moments CD immediately after Apple assumed the role of lead pastor at the South Barrington campus. Gene was asked the question: “as Bill moves over to the Willow Creek Association, ‘who follows Bill’?” Gene’s answer was great…and prophetic, “Nobody!” That ended up being the perfect answer as Gene only lasted a couple years as their head pastor before he resigned and Bill took the wheel back. Read about it (HERE)
Here’s what I’m interested in: Do you feel pressure to perform? What does that look like? How do you handle it?
Moment of Transparency: Here’s how it looks in my life and ministry:
Q1 – Yes there’s a lot of pressure.
Q2 – Don’t make mistakes or you’ll not be here long.
Q3 – It took time, but I’ve learned to relax, do my best…and accept that my best is good enough.
How about you?
