Team Time Chili Cook Off – Setting Expectations
Last night marked the 2nd Annual Studio 6.7 Chili Cook-Off. For a second year in a row, it was a blast. Seven of our volunteers submitted their Chili for judging. (I was going to submit MY chili, but I didn’t have time to run out to Wendy’s and pick some up.) Anyway, here are the highlights of our amazing keynote speaker’s talk… holy cow he was good!
Great teams are made up of team members working together as one unit. Team members work together when expectations are clear and understood by all. We want our ministry to work as one effective team…so here are 3 expectations that we (the Studio 6.7 Team) have of every volunteer and 3 expectations that every volunteers can have of the Studio 6.7 Staff.
3 expectations we have of every volunteer
1. Arrive early…I mean on time.
We expect every volunteer to arrive 30 minutes prior to his or her service time. This allows us to have confidence that every room is adequately staffed before the children arrive. Please call us if you are running late or unable to serve. If you know you will not be able serve during your shift, please call ahead so that we can find a replacement… or better yet, find a replacement and let us know.
2. Interact with the kids
We have great “visual environments” here in Studio 6.7; however, we believe firmly that YOU create the environment we’re looking for in our ministry. Remember that we expect every volunteer to interact, socialize, and /or hang out with the kids…not other leaders. When we (volunteers) take interest in children, their unlocked! This opens them up to listening and accepting God’s Word.
3. Recruit 1 volunteer
After nine years of leading in children’s ministry I have come to learn (and FIRMLY believe) that YOU are our #1 recruitment tool. When a staff member “recruits” the odds are that people are responding out of a sense of guilt. To be honest, most of the time, these volunteers don’t “stick”. However, when a volunteer recruits another volunteer… these stick!
3 expectations you can have of us
1. You will be well resourced
We will do our very best to be sure that when you arrive to serve, you have everything you need to get the job done. We want to be sure that we’ve taken all the guesswork out of serving in Studio 6.7. Your Area Director or Team Leader will be sure that you have the supplies you need, the right curriculum and complete instructions clearly laid out for you.
2. We will try hard to over communicate
Our staff has gained the reputation of “over communicating”. Name one ministry in America that has been accused of that! Until now, I couldn’t name one. Usually, all I hear is how poor of a job “the church” does in communicating with volunteers, parents, and members. Our staff works hard to over communicate. This means:
you will receive emails from the Children’s Pastor, your Director, and your Team Leader. It also means that we won’t send “fluff”. We understand that you receive hundreds of emails every day. It’s because of this that we are committed to only send you pertinent information about upcoming events or weekend services.
3. We will actively recruit
Not everyone knows this, but our staff is actively recruiting for Studio 6.7. Email, letters, announcements, parent take-homes, and sign-ups are weekly occurrences around Studio 6.7. Above and beyond that, we are always working our way through a parent call list. This list is comprised of parents of children in our ministry who are currently NOT serving. We call each of these parents and discuss the need and invite them to serve with the hundreds of volunteers already committed to serving the families of Northview Church.
It’s crucial that every member of our team has a clear understanding of what is expected of them and what to expect from us. I’m excited to know that the expectations are clear and we’re ready to move forward and advance the kingdom in BIG ways this fall. Have a great week of service!
