Tuesday Morning Controversy – Why Do Christian Movies suck?
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010Quick story -
My wife and I watched Fireproof a few months back (like most pastors…because we HAD to since everyone was was saying is was such a great movie). Here’s my confession. It took us 2 days to watch it. Why? Because I turned it off after 20 minutes because the acting and dialogue were SO bad! Now, here’s the redeeming factor of my story ~ the next day, we turned it back on and forced ourselves to finish what we started…and afterwords… it wasn’t too bad. The dialogue picked up (a little) and that helped the acting a bit. Most importantly, the message was really good. THE PROBLEM- I almost missed the message since I turned it off after 20 minutes.
I read (THIS) great article the other day on Shrink the Church. Here’s the gist of this controversial article … This article compares “most Christian movies” such as Fireproof and Left Behind to Porn in that the people who generally follow these movies will do so regardless of the act that the acting is terrible, the dialogue is forced and unrealistic and the “plot” is cheese.
Do you agree? Which Christian movies do YOU feel like you can recommend?

Cultivating the land
Monday, July 26th, 2010Listen to this 2:30 second clip…
(Click here to Listen to ‘Locust’)
We continually create and re-create the environment of our ministry. Have you prepared the soil in such a way as to become a breeding ground for pests such as negativity and complaining, or have you prepared the soil in such a way as to eradicate pests from your ministry?
How do we cultivate healthy soil?
1. We turn the soil over
Healthy ministries do not allow an atmosphere of negativity to reign. By this I mean, negative people are lovingly confronted and challenged to be solution seekers and not merely faultfinders.
2. We fertilize the soil
One thing that is consistent in every healthy ministry is this: positive leaders lead them. I’ve NEVER seen a healthy ministry led by someone who wasn’t continually encouraging volunteers and casting vision. This kind of positivity is contagious! It spreads throughout the ministry and as a result, volunteers and leaders gain a healthy perspective of ministry.
3. We harvest at the appropriate times
Leaders of healthy ministries celebrate what God is doing. Celebrating God’s goodness is a key element found in environments that repel “pests”. They cannot survive in soil that’s rich in gratefulness and Worship.
